Your contribution to a more sustainable hotel and hospitality sector

What’s the challenge? Environmental awareness is on the rise in almost all areas of life. The hospitality sector (e.g. hotels, serviced apartments, student housing for long term stays) is experiencing a growing focus on sustainable solutions. This heightened attention regarding sustainability is driven not only by economic and regulatory considerations but also by an upsurge in customer expectations. Ultimately, sustainability emerges now as one of the pivotal factors in the decision-making process for selecting accommodations, particularly for residents making long-term commitments.

In this context, a survey has been conducted in three different European cities including behaviours connected to sustainability. In it, it has been found that younger generations (between 25 and 35) truly believe they could do more than they currently do to improve their sustainable behaviour. With this in mind, we want to make your voice heard and implement great ideas in our partner network!

How can you contribute?

❔ What sustainability related actions and measures could the hospitality sector take to make your stay experience (especially younger generations) more sustainable without disrupting the experience in a negative way?

❔ How could hospitality companies actively encourage more sustainable behaviour among this target audience? Feel free to use your previous experiences staying in any short- or long-term accommodation as a reference for ideas, or for good and bad examples. Consider all channels and spaces used, as well as moments before, during and after the visitor journey. You can scroll to the bottom for some first inspirations.

What’s in it for you? The winner can choose between a solar-powered power bank to help you make your journey even more sustainable or an invite to the 196+ roundtable Germany* which takes place in Berlin (venue to be confirmed) on the afternoon of Thursday 13th June 2024.

How do we select the winner? The jury will choose one contribution which feel best demonstrate innovation, practicality, and impact on stay experience/visitor journey. But that’s not all! To ensure that your voice as a community is heard, 50% of a previous crowdvoting will be included in the final assessment by the jury. This means that 50% of the score is based on the crowdvoting and 50% on the jury evaluation.

  • Users can leave their towel hanging in case they want to reuse it.
  • Users can suggest having their room cleaned only once a week instead of every day.
  • Place a display in the shower with a small animation depicting a polar bear drowning due to the ice melting if you took a shower for too long.

*This invite only event, conducted in English, is part of a global series of roundtables held throughout the year, bringing together actors from within the hospitality industry (operators, developers, investors, architects and suppliers) to debate the questions of the moment relating to this dynamic sector. The informal roundtable format is led by the local PKF hospitality team and includes market updates and short presentations, but most importantly facilitates open ‘group’ discussion between the attendees. Conversations continue over a post event drink and informal dinner nearby. Travel and accommodation costs are not included as part of the rewards. The attendee will also receive an invite to the end of year 196+ Summit Europe, held online in December 2024, which summarises the year of roundtables within Europe.

Project description: The Future of Hospitality Institute is the think-tank of PKF hospitality group in charge of the Future Living research project aiming to identify major trends and innovations, as well as future-proof solutions, that will become relevant for the future of the service living industry on a global scale. Future of Hospitality Institute has brought together an exclusive circle of partners to guide them in cooperation with other research organisations to collaborate to identify key future living trends and solutions and define feasible living concepts based on applied research and shared experiences.
